Before agreeing to any recurring charge inside a gaming app, confirm the exact renewal amount, the renewal frequency, and the actual cancellation method — not just the introductory price shown at signup.
Some platforms in this category offer subscription-style perks — ad removal, bonus multipliers, or VIP-tier benefits — billed on a recurring basis. This page covers what’s worth checking before you agree to one.
What to confirm before subscribing
- The actual renewal price, not just an introductory or discounted first-period price. Recurring charges often step up after an initial period.
- The renewal frequency — weekly, monthly, or another interval — stated clearly, not buried in terms you’d need to search for.
- The specific cancellation method — whether it’s handled through your app store account (generally easier to manage and verify) or only through the platform’s own settings (worth testing you can actually find and use before you need it).
Why app-store-managed billing is generally safer
A subscription billed through the Google Play Store gives you a centralized place to view and cancel active subscriptions, independent of the app itself. A subscription billed directly by the platform (common for platforms distributing outside the Play Store) puts you more at the mercy of that platform’s own cancellation process actually working as described.
A quick check before you commit
Before subscribing, look specifically for how to cancel — not just how to sign up. If cancellation isn’t clearly documented anywhere, or only appears reachable through a support request rather than a direct setting, treat that as a real friction point you’re likely to encounter later, not a hypothetical one.
This is a narrower, financial-safety companion to our broader APK safety checklist — worth its own explicit check rather than an assumption that a subscription works the way its signup screen implies.
Where to find and cancel recurring payments
- Google Play: open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions. Every active Play subscription is listed there with a cancel option.
- UPI AutoPay: recurring UPI payments are set up as “mandates”. Your UPI app lists active mandates, usually under a section called AutoPay or Mandates, and lets you pause or revoke each one.
- Cards: under RBI rules, a recurring card payment needs a registered e-mandate, and your bank must send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each charge. You can cancel a mandate through your bank or card app. Charges above ₹15,000 generally need your approval each time.
Apps distributed as APKs can’t use Play billing, so their recurring charges, if any, come through UPI AutoPay or card mandates. Those are the places to check.
A charge you didn’t agree to
First revoke the mandate in your UPI or bank app so no further payments go through. Then raise a dispute with your bank, and if you think it was fraud, report it to the National Cyber Crime Helpline on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.
VIP tiers and “daily rewards”
Many gaming apps don’t sell subscriptions at all. They use VIP levels and daily login rewards that keep you depositing to stay at a tier. These aren’t recurring charges, so nothing cancels them, but the effect on spending is similar. Set a deposit limit with yourself, and with your bank where possible.
Since 1 May 2026, payments for online money games are prohibited in India. See online gaming law in India.
