A card, slot, or rummy-style game legitimately needs internet access and basic storage permission. It has no real reason to request SMS, call log, contacts, or camera/microphone access beyond what a payment step might briefly require.
Every game review on this site includes a line about checking permissions before installing. This is the expanded version: what’s actually normal for this category of app, and what isn’t.
Permissions that are ordinary for this category
- Internet access — required for essentially any online game to function at all.
- Storage — used to cache game assets, save progress, or handle downloads.
- Notifications — used for game updates or promotional alerts, though you can decline this without breaking the app.
Permissions worth stopping over
- SMS or call log access — a card or slot game has no functional need to read your text messages or call history. This is one of the more common permissions abused for fraud, since it can be used to intercept one-time passwords.
- Contacts — sometimes requested to power a “refer a friend” feature, but that feature can work through a shareable code instead. Full contact list access is a broader request than the feature requires.
- Camera or microphone, requested at install time — legitimate only if the app has a specific, visible feature that needs it (rare for this category). A blanket request with no obvious in-app use is worth questioning.
- Accessibility service access — a powerful permission that can let an app read content from other apps on your device. Extremely rare to see a legitimate reason for a gaming app to ask for this.
What to actually do about it
Android lets you review and deny individual permissions after installation, not just at install time — use that. If an app stops functioning because you declined a permission it doesn’t obviously need, that’s useful information in itself, not a problem to work around.
This is one piece of the broader check covered in our APK safety checklist — permissions review is worth doing on its own terms, in detail, rather than skimming past during installation.
